Around the leagues

Great Northern: It’s a big baseball week as five teams with winning league records collide in six games. On Saturday, a pair of doubleheaders gets things going, as first-place Medical Lake (6-2, 6-1) plays at third-place Colville (7-4, 7-4) and fourth-place Pullman (4-2, 3-2, through Tuesday) travels to second-place Lakeside (7-4, 7-3). Fifth-place Riverside (7-4, 5-4) has single games Tuesday (Lakeside) and Wednesday (at Pullman). … On the softball field, three teams are still undefeated (Colville, Chewelah and Pullman). Actually, it’s four counting Riverside, which still hasn’t completed a league game but is scheduled to play five doubleheaders in the next three weeks.

Northeast A: Freeman’s boys and girls both finished in the top five Saturday at the Freeman Invite at Central Valley High School. Jessie DePell won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 4 1/2 inches as Freeman’s girls took fourth place. Chris Davis’ 11.4 100 meters and 19-11 long jump won both events as the Scotties boys took fifth. Newport’s boys took third.

Bi-County: Liberty’s baseball team has played only one league game against a team with a winning record. The Lancers (6-3, 4-1) will get a chance to take over first place this week with a doubleheader in Ritzville against first-place Lind-Ritzville (11-1, 8-0) and a single game at home Tuesday against the team they are tied for second with, Almira/Coulee-Hartline (7-3, 5-2). … There are a pair of softball doubleheaders between the top four teams in the league this week as Davenport (6-3, 4-0) plays at Odessa (9-0, 6-0) on Friday and Liberty (5-0, 4-0) travels to Lind-Ritzville (6-6, 6-2) Saturday.

Panorama: First place should be decided in baseball this weekend, as Northport (12-1, 10-0) plays a doubleheader Saturday at second-place St. George’s (8-1, 5-1). St. George’s is coming off a split with fourth-place Springdale while the Mustangs have won 10 straight. … The big softball doubleheader this week is between a pair of two-loss teams when Springdale (10-2) plays at Curlew (8-2) on Saturday. Two teams still have one loss: Selkirk (9-1) and Inchelium (7-1).

Whitman County: This coming week will include pivotal three-game series in baseball and softball. In baseball, first-place Colton (4-0) meets Garfield-Palouse (3-1), starting with a doubleheader Saturday in Colton and concluding Tuesday in Garfield. Asotin (3-1) will look to stay in the league title race with a three-game set against last-place St. John-Endicott (1-5), starting Saturday in Asotin. … Colton (2-0) and Gar-Pal (2-1) will also be a pivotal softball matchup, with the games taking place at the same locations.
