Temple observance will recall Holocaust

Temple Beth Shalom, 1322 E. 30th Ave., is joining Jews everywhere to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah, at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremburg, Germany. In recognition of this, the theme, “Let there Be Light Again: Sixty Years After Nuremburg,” will tell the story of the Holocaust, as well as discuss the many atrocities that are inflicted upon other humans today.

George Critchlow, an associate professor at Gonzaga School of Law and founding member and former director of the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, will speak.

The evening will also include music, readings, reflections of survivors and a memorial candle lighting.

Centennial celebration

Trinity United Methodist Church, 1725 E. Bridgeport Ave., grew from three different Methodist churches in the Hillyard neighborhood. On Sunday, Trinity will celebrate the 100th anniversary of one of those churches, Hays Park Methodist Episcopal Church, which was established on March 1, 1906.

The Rev. Joey Olson will lead the 10:30 a.m. worship service, and there will be a potluck luncheon after the service.

Japan Week celebration

In conjunction with Japan Week, the Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., is offering a food bazaar, teriyaki boxed lunch and special services and lectures this weekend.

The food bazaar will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will include a chicken teriyaki boxed lunch, for $8.50, senbei, and a bake sale.

There also will be a lecture, “The Influence of Japanese Culture on Buddhist Thought,” Saturday at 7 p.m. The Rev. Gregory Gibbs of the Oregon Buddhist Temple will speak.

The service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. will be a Hanamatsuri, or Flower Festival, service that will celebrate the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, who would grow up to become the Buddha.

Orthodox Easter

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., is celebrating Easter according to the Orthodox calendar.

The church is offering a Vesperal Divine Liturgy service today at 9:30 a.m. that will commemorate Christ’s Last Supper with his disciples. There also will be a Service of the Passion at 7 p.m.that will include 12 readings from the Gospels and will conclude with a procession with an icon of Christ being crucified.

Services on Friday will be the Royal Hours, which will recount the story of the Crucifixion, Old Testament prophecies, psalms and hymns at 9:30 a.m. There also will be a Vespers of the Unnailing service at 3:30 p.m. that will re-enact the taking down of Christ’s body.

A Lamentations service will be at 7 p.m. Friday to express the grief of Jesus’ death.

Saturday services will start at 9:30 a.m. with Vesperal Divine Liturgy. There also will be an 11 p.m. vigil and 11:45 p.m. Resurrection service.

Orthodox Easter Sunday will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with the Agape Vespers, which will be read in many languages.

Documentary screening

The Christian Youth Theater-Spokane, 708 W. Nora Ave., is screening the documentary, “Invisible Children,” Saturday at 7 p.m.

The film explains the plight of children in Northern Uganda who are kidnapped and forced into military service.

Invisible Children Inc. is an organization that helps the people of Northern Uganda and helps to put more than 300 children through school.

The screening will be free.

Spring musical

The children of Northwest Christian Elementary School, 1412 W. Central Ave., are presenting “King of the Jungle,” a musical about the faithfulness of God, today at 7 p.m. and Friday at 9 a.m. Admission is free.

Vocal classes

Sing From the Heart Vocal Performance workshops will be offered at Manito United Methodist Church, 3220 S. Grand Blvd.

The workshop for kids ages 6 through 12 will be on Thursdays for six weeks from 4 to 5 p.m. starting next Thursday.

The teen workshop will be Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. starting May 2.

The cost for either session is $90.

Global music seminar

Whitworth College, 300 W. Hawthorne Road, is presenting Michael Hawn today at 7 p.m. in the Seeley Mudd Chapel on campus.

Hawn will speak on the topic “Gather into One: Praying and Singing with Christians Worldwide,” which will discuss global church music.

Book sale

First Presbyterian Church, 318 S. Cedar St., is offering its annual Colossal Book Sale Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Books for sale will include best sellers, children’s books, fiction, religious books and inspirational books.

Proceeds will benefit the church’s adult and children’s libraries.

Many books that are not sold will be donated to local and foreign missions.

Spokane Christian Singles is presenting speed dating Saturday at 6 p.m. for those in their 20s, 30s and 40s at Frontier West Restaurant, 2121 N. Division St. The group also will offer a session for those older than 45 at 3 p.m. Sunday, also at Frontier West.

The cost is $10 for your first session and $7 for any session after that.
