Avista building new power line

The Spokesman-Review

Avista Utilities will begin building a 60-mile electricity transmission line between Rosalia, Wash., and Lewiston, Idaho.

The $40 million project is expected to bolster service reliability and prepare the company for the area’s growing power needs.

The first 34 miles of the project from Rosalia to Colfax, and then on to a substation near Albion, will begin this year. The rest of the line will be built next year.

Avista said it will be replacing wood poles now lined up across the Palouse with new steel poles.

It is another piece of Avista’s $120 million transmission improvement initiative begun in 2003.

Income growth beats nation’s

Personal income in Kootenai County grew 8.9 percent between 2003 and 2004, outpacing the national growth rate of 6 percent.

Kootenai County’s personal income totaled more than $3 billion in 2004, according to statistics released this week by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Personal income measures the income of all residents from all sources, including wages, investment earnings and government payments.

Personal income in Spokane County grew by 5.5 percent from 2003 to 2004, totaling more than $12 billion in 2004.

Idaho officials attributed the increase in personal income to construction activity, which has boosted both employment and wages, and recoveries in both the manufacturing and high tech sectors.

In addition, the state’s population continues to grow, and some of those new residents bring companies with them.
