Child dies of injuries; man, 37, held in case

The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane man may face new charges after a 20-month-old child he is accused of injuring died on Sunday.

The child had been admitted to Sacred Heart Medical Center with a head injury on Saturday, police spokesman Jennifer DeRuwe said in a news release Sunday. Medical staff contacted Spokane Police, who interviewed family members, then arrested Avery Sam, 37, on charges of first-degree assault of a child.

Two other children were removed from the home.

New charges likely will be filed against Sam now that the child has died, DeRuwe said.

Young said the All-American Rally in the Valley is about patriotism and thanking people who serve their community and country. Scouts, veterans, nurses, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and others will be recognized.

Entertainment will include square dancers and a horse drill team.

Food will be available for purchase at the rally, which will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
