Whitworth grad Jordan Sand receives prestigious scholarship

Jordan Sand of Coeur d’Alene was recently awarded a $300,000 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship. The award provides $50,000 per year for up to six years of graduate study. Sand, a 2006 graduate of Whitworth College, plans to attend the University of Washington School of Medicine to earn a medical degree. Scholarships were given to 77 students from around the country out of 1,100 who applied.

“Ernie Hoffman, a hoist operator at the Galena Mine in Silverton, Idaho, placed second in a mine rescue competition held recently in Reno, Nev. Hoffman is a benchman on the Galena Mine rescue team. More than 30 teams participated in the competition, which was sponsored by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

“The following North Idaho residents recently graduated from Washington State University. Students are listed by their hometowns, and the focus of each degree is listed. All received bachelor’s degrees unless otherwise indicated.

Coeur d’Alene: Matthew Reid, communication; Margaux Gunther, humanities; and Autumn Ramsrud, microbiology, cum laude.

Genesee: Andrea Morscheck, genetic and cell biology.

Hayden Lake: Anastasia Kostina, psychology, magna cum laude; and Chelsea Rosenberger, communication, magna cum laude.

Moscow: Kelleen Barham, music; Heather Brurud, zoology, magna cum laude; Denise Chambers, education; Sara Garcia, business administration; Heidi Poxleitner, Doctor of Pharmacy; Stephanie Shaffer, criminal justice, cum laude; and Afra Willard, social sciences.

Post Falls: Colin Anderson, architectural studies, magna cum laude; and Jennifer Goeckner, nursing, magna cum laude.

St. Maries: Thomas Reinhardt, business administration, summa cum laude.

Wallace: Erika Cantamessa, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

Eastern Washington

“Trevor Head recently received an Eagle Scout award, the highest given in the Boy Scouts. Head, a member of Troop 419, is the son of Tim and Tammy Head of Spokane Valley. He is a student at University High School. For his project he refurbished the deck at Camp Caro Park.

“Three area students were recently awarded engineering scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year at Washington State University.

Andrew Mikami was awarded a $500 Harold Frank Engineering Scholarship. Mikami, a 2006 graduate of Central Valley High School, is the son of Gloria and Russell Mikami of Spokane.

Mara Ryan and Christopher Watts were each awarded a $2,000 Charles W. Harrison Engineering Scholarship. Ryan, the daughter of Kim and Greg Ryan of Spokane, is a 2006 graduate of Mead High School. Watts, a 2006 graduate of Ephrata High School, is the son of Autumn and Douglass Watts of Ephrata.

“Timothy Slemp recently was promoted to major in the Army. Slemp, a 1996 graduate of Whitworth College and Gonzaga ROTC, is the son of Randall and Rosemary Slemp of Reardan, Wash. Slemp’s wife, Anna Slemp, also was promoted to the rank of major. Both are stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash.

“Daniel King was recently commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army after completing the ROTC program at the University of Idaho and earning a bachelor’s degree. King is the son of Marvin and Martha King of Spokane.

“Rhiannon Ervin of Spokane recently graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

“Melissa Sanborn was a member of the Washington State University food development team that participated in the recent California Almond Board Almond Innovations Competition. The team created Almond Dingers, a single-serve microwaveable gluten-free almond cake. The recipe took the grand prize.

Sanborn, a 1997 graduate of Ferris High School, is currently earning a master’s degree in food science at WSU.

“Felicia Alexander of Spokane recently graduated from California Lutheran University with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish.

“Selina Sebert of Spokane recently graduated from Baker College Online with an associate’s degree in business.

“The Sacred Heart School of Nursing Alumni Association recently announced the recipients of scholarships.

Kellie Barden was awarded a $1,000 Sacred Heart School of Nursing Scholarship. Mary Fautz was awarded a $1,000 Patricia Bautch McGuire Scholarship and a $500 Connie Holum Scholarship. Erik Gamble was awarded a $500 Betty Harrington Scholarship and a $500 Margaret Olney Scholarship.

Aaron Hall was awarded a $1,000 Sister Peter Claver Scholarship. Laura Jacobs was awarded a $1,000 Sacred Heart School of Nursing Scholarship. Michelle Kiddoo was awarded a $1,000 Mary Larang Scholarship.

“Julian Peterson recently graduated magna cum laude from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. Peterson, a 2003 graduate of West Valley High School, is the son of Eric and Martena Peterson of Spokane.

“Beau Racus recently was promoted to the rank of specialist in the Army. He is currently assigned to the 12th Infantry Battalion, Fort Hood, Texas. Racus, a 2003 graduate of University High School, is the son of Michael and Christine Racus of Spokane Valley.

“Air Force Airman Benjamin Indahl recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Indahl, the son of Berne Indahl of Spokane, is a 2003 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

“Army Spec. Jereme Sienkiewicz recently graduated from the Army Ranger School at Fort Benning, Ga. He is currently assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Fort Richardson, Alaska. A 2004 graduate of Ferris High School, he is the son of Curtis Sienkiewicz and Debra Day, both of Spokane.

“Four local students were recently awarded scholarships for the 2006-07 academic year at Western Washington University.

Katelyn Carroll received $500 President’s Scholarship. Carroll, a graduate of Mt. Spokane High School, is the daughter of Richard and Cindy Carroll of Mead.

Megan Charbonneau received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship. Charbonneau, a graduate of Lakeside High School, is the daughter of Glenn and Perri Charbonneau of Nine Mile Falls.

Kathryn Osterback received a $1,500 Seattle Business Forum Scholarship. Osterback, the daughter of John and Susan Osterback of Spokane, attended University High School.

Marie Phillips received a $1,500 Seattle Business Forum Scholarship. Phillips, a graduate of East Valley High School, is the daughter of Jerry Phillips of Otis Orchards and Eve Phillips of Spokane.

“Ruth Wherland of Pullman recently graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla with a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies. Wherland, a graduate of Pullman High School, is the daughter of Scott and Lea Wherland of Pullman.

“Sonna Brado, owner of the Jaazz Salon and Skin Care Center in Spokane, was a finalist in the recent North America Hairstylist Awards competition in Las Vegas. She was one of five finalists in the long-hair dressing category. There were more than 600 entries in the competition.

“ Elliot Eaton, a junior at Lewis and Clark High School, was selected to attend the Yale Junior Statesmen of America summer program in New Haven, Conn. He was one of about 1,500 students selected to attend sessions at five locations. Eaton was selected based on his PSAT scores, personal essay, academic achievement and a teacher’s recommendation.
