Adu traded to Real Salt Lake

Freddy Adu was traded Monday from D.C. United to Real Salt Lake, ending a sometimes tumultuous three-year run in Washington for the highly touted teenager who clashed with his coach and was often frustrated by his role.

The 17-year-old will move to an MLS franchise in need of a marketable star as it hopes to boost attendance and gain support for a new stadium. He will also get to be an attacking midfielder, a position he never played consistently with United.

“FC Dallas assistant Steve Morrow was promoted to head coach of the MLS team in Frisco, Texas.

Federer, Hardenne win

Roger Federer and Justine Henin-Hardenne were selected the International Tennis Federation’s world champions.

Federer became only the fourth player to win the men’s award three straight years, joining Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Henin-Hardenne edged Amelie Mauresmo to win the women’s award for the second time, adding to her success in 2003.

“Fernando Meligeni resigned as captain of Brazil’s Davis Cup team after nearly two years.

“Nigel Sears is the new captain of Britain’s Fed Cup team.

Tulane hires coach

New Mexico offensive coordinator Bob Toledo, the former UCLA head coach, is taking over at Tulane after one season on the Lobos staff.

“Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback coach Mark Whipple has interviewed for the head coaching job at Boston College, Steelers coach Bill Cowher said.

“Bob Bronzan, who coached Bill Walsh and Dick Vermeil at San Jose State before becoming the school’s athletic director, died in Lincoln, Calif. He was 87. The cause wasn’t disclosed.

Sprinter banned

Norwegian sprinter Aham Okeke received a lifetime ban after a third positive doping offense. In a unanimous decision on Nov. 14, the disciplinary board for the Norwegian Sports Federation and national Olympic committee banned Okeke for life because of repeated offenses.

Oo Mya Sanda of Myanmar tested positive for a banned metabolite.

“Jimmie Johnson was “horsing around” on top of a moving golf cart in Charlotte, N.C., when he fell off and broke his left wrist, his team told the Associated Press.
