Tumwater twins select EWU

The Spokesman-Review

Twin brothers Zach and Matt Johnson of Tumwater High School have made an oral commitment to play football at Eastern Washington University, according to their coach, Sid Otton.

Zach was the Evergreen Conference Most Valuable Player this year, rushing for more than 1,900 yards and averaging 10.5 yards a carry for the T-Birds. Zach, also a linebacker, caught a touchdown pass and ran for another in Tumwater’s 28-25 win over undefeated Colville in the State 2A playoffs.

Zach, 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, and Matt (6-2, 204) both were all-league selections as juniors. But Matt, also a running back and strong safety, suffered a high-ankle sprain this season and missed five games.

Both players were four-year starters for Otton at Tumwater. Otton said in his 32 years as the coach at Tumwater, just three players have started all four years.

The national letter of intent day is Feb. 7.
