Achievements: Derek Slaughter attains Eagle rank

Derek Slaughter was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts. Slaughter, a student at Shadle Park High School, is the son of Dan and Carla Slaughter of Spokane. For his project Slaughter raised guide dogs to be used to help the blind. He is a member of Troop 171.

“Four area residents recently graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Army National Guard Pvt. Katrina Briggs is the daughter of Lisa McCurty of Moses Lake.

Army National Guard Pvt. Thomas Palmer is a student at Cheney High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. Cameron Martin, the son of Tonya Peters of Nine Mile Fills, is a student at Lakeside High School.

Army Pfc. Andrea Fuentes is a 2006 graduate of North Central High School.

“Three area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base.

Air Force Airman 1st Class John Anderson, the son of Rick and Kelly Bralley of Spokane, is a 2005 graduate of Mead High School.

Air Force Airman Bryan McCart, the son of Randy and Karen McCart of Quincy, Wash., is a 2006 graduate of Quincy High School.

Air Force Airman Joseph Wilkes, a 2006 graduate of Ferris High School, is the son of Rosialy Tesarik of Spokane.

“Several area students are recent recipients of scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year at Eastern Washington University.

Brandon Adkins was awarded a $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarship. The award is given to incoming freshmen with a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher. Adkins, a 2006 graduate of University High School, is the son of Brian and Janice Adkins of Spokane Valley.

Kyla Brown was awarded a $900 HOME Childcare Scholarship. Brown, a 2001 graduate of Newport (Wash.) High School, is the daughter of Terry Schmidt of Spokane and George Brown of Idaho.

Alexander Chernikov was also awarded a $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarship. Chernikov, the son of Alex and Lena Chernikov of Spokane, is a 2006 graduate of Valley Christian High School.

Sabrina Chobot was awarded a $900 HOME Childcare Scholarship. Chobot, a 2000 graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the daughter of Lou and Sharon Chobot of Spokane.

Nicole Murphy was awarded a $2,500 Scholastic Honors Scholarship. Murphy, a 2006 graduate of Shadle High School, is the daughter of George and Sandy Murphy of Spokane.

Kelsea Pullin of Spokane was awarded a $1,500 American Indian Studies Program Multicultural Achievement Scholarship. The award is given to American Indian students. Pullin, a 2006 graduate of Mead High School, is the daughter of Robert Pullin and Maureen Rosette.

“Allegra Miller was recently named to the Dean’s List at New Saint Andrews College in Moscow. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.75 or above to be named to the list. Miller, the daughter of Merril and Debbie Miller of Spokane Valley, is a graduate of The Oaks Academy.

Idaho

“ Brad Ost of Post Falls was one of 12 students in Idaho selected to attend the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. Ost, 12, will represent the horse program. Ost, the son of Richard and Kerri Ost, is home schooled.
