An elected official never knows whom she might meet at a political event. A constituent? A supporter? A future fiancé?

U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris met Brian Rodgers last year at an event in Spokane. The Eastern Washington congresswoman and the former naval aviator started dating.

On Tuesday, Rodgers, who works as a facilities manager for a church in San Diego, was in Washington, D.C., and proposed. McMorris said yes.

For those who’ve forgotten, Tuesday was Valentine’s Day.

“We’re very happy,” McMorris said Friday in a news release.

They haven’t set a date, but “Brian is looking forward to returning to Eastern Washington and being an active part of my re-election campaign,” she added.

McMorris, 36, is a former state legislator from Colville who won a three-way Republican primary and the general election for Eastern Washington’s open congressional seat in 2004. She faces re-election this fall.

Rodgers, a 49-year-old Spokane native and Ferris High School graduate, has a resume that includes the U.S. Naval Academy and some 20 years in the Navy. But he’s not a complete stranger to politics.

His father, David Rodgers, was the mayor of Spokane from 1967 to 1977 – the last mayor to win re-election.
