The Slice: A day for beating the odds

Wednesday might be a good day to start a diet.

It’s the anniversary of the historic hockey upset at the 1980 Olympics.

You can exercise and fend off snacks while muttering, “Do you believe in miracles? … YESSS!”

Good luck.

“More macaroni and cheese honors: “My sister, Pam Dubrock, makes the best mac and cheese ever,” wrote Janelle Baker. “Homemade sauce and different kinds of cheese. Baked to perfection, all nice and brown and crunchy around the outside.”

“My mother, Donna Fleiger of Colville, make the best macaroni and cheese,” wrote Sara Cochran of Chewelah. “It is hot and creamy with a wonderful bread-crumb topping that adds the right amount of texture. I am 31 years old, and I still ask for it for my birthday dinner.”

Eric Dubes described his wife Jana’s macaroni and cheese as “A gooey mass of deliciousness.”

And Donna Friedman said her sister Eleanor in Yakima “Really gets after it” and produces an unbeatable homemade mac and cheese.

“More on parking: “There is plenty of parking downtown,” wrote Garry Matlow. “Some of it happens to be in garages. Reinforcing the myth that there’s a parking shortage does a disservice to all concerned.”

“Challenging The Slice’s long-held vision of regional reality: “I lived on the West Side twice in my lifetime and never heard a discouraging word about Spokane or the East Side from anyone,” wrote Janet Culbertson of Spokane. “Even after I told folks that I was originally from here, they had nothing but kind words about this area.”

“Tossing the TV remote across the room seemed like an OK idea until…: “It bounced off the cat and landed in the fish tank.” — Lyn Miller

“You had to toss four more remotes to turn on the surround sound, the digital cable, the HD receiver, and TiVo, thus turning your living room into a Cirque du Soleil juggling act.” — Jody Zellman

“Slice answers: All our recent presidents were mentioned by readers suggesting who would be saluted on Worst Presidents Day. But Warren G. Harding garnered the most nominations.

A newspaper publisher with exceptionally large feet, Harding was known for an unwillingness to take firm stands.

I thought Andrew Johnson would get a lot of votes. But I was wrong.

“Warm-up question from Slice reader Alison Duke: “Does anyone else find it hilarious that Exit Real Estate is in a remodeled funeral home?”

“Today’s Slice question (for grandparents): What do your grandchildren call you and how did they come up with that name?
