Pick up – it’s the Y

Jennifer Larue Correspondent

In the evening, starting Monday through Thursday, your phone might ring. YMCA will appear on your caller ID. Calling from 30 phones donated by Cricket Communications for the phone-a-thon, volunteers will be asking you to help them “Reach for the Stars.”

It is all part of their Partners for Youth campaign, and the group hopes to raise enough money to provide thousands of scholarships for children from low-income families. The scholarships will let the youths participate in sports, child care, swimming, the skate park and many other activities.

The callers will include students from University, Central Valley, West Valley, East Valley, Ferris and Lewis and Clark high schools. Members of Boy Scout Troop No. 420, the Master’s Commission, the Oaks Classical Christian Academy and the Student Advisory Council will be making calls as well. The Spokane Area Swim Team will be manning most of the phones on March 1.

Sponsors for the four-day event include Longhorn Barbecue, the Brickhouse Massage and Coffee Bar, Inland Northwest Bank, Washington Trust Bank, Costco, Yoke’s, Brett Enterprises, Albertsons and the Rocket Bakery.
