Pimona-Pitzer edges Whitworth

The Whitworth Pirates had five players score in double figures – led by the 16 of Lance Pecht – but dropped its second straight close game at the Occidental Holiday Classic men’s basketball tournament in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Ed Wexler-Beron scored 25 as Pomona-Pitzer (5-5) held on for a 68-64 win over the Pirates (7-4). The Whits lost by a point in the tourney opener.

•Sarah Scates scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and pulled down six rebounds as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated an alumni team 67-45 in women’s play at SFCC.

Kelly Pilkington led the alumni with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Junior hockey

Grand Forks scored a pair of first-period goals and held on for a 2-1 win over the visiting Spokane Braves in KIJHL play. Sam Read scored for the Braves.
