Widman, Spartans beat Gar-Pal for first time since 1987

Kris Widman scored 20 points and hit 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter as Rosalia snapped a pair of long losing streaks with a 47-36 victory over Garfield-Palouse in a Whitman County League game Tuesday night in Garfield.

Nathan Bailey added nine points for the Spartans (4-5, 2-0), who snapped a 39-game losing streak to the Vikings. Rosalia’s last victory over Gar-Pal was a 73-65 win in the 1987 WCL tournament.

The Spartans also snapped a 50-game league road losing streak, winning their first WCL game away from Rosalia since beating Tekoa-Oakesdale 44-28 on Jan. 11, 1997.

Todd Pinter led Gar-Pal (2-6, 1-1) with 15 points.

•In other WCL action, Bryce Johnson scored 19 points to lead four St. John-Endicott players in double figures as the Eagles (8-2, 3-0) routed Tekoa-Oakesdale 87-58 in Tekoa. Daniel Palmer scored 15 to lead the Nighthawks (4-4, 2-1), who trailed 48-20 at halftime. … Charles Appleton scored 18 points to lead Asotin (5-3, 1-2) to a 73-52 victory over visiting Colton (1-8, 0-3).

•Michael Taylor had 29 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists to lead Brewster to a 76-61 victory over host Republic in a non-league game. Derek Gianukakis had 30 points and 15 rebounds for Republic (7-2), which trailed 40-25 at halftime and shot just 1 of 17 from 3-point range. … Ben Hein scored 13 points and Pullman (6-1) shot 7 of 10 from 3-point range in a 72-38 rout of visiting Colfax. Brian Danaher scored 11 to lead the Bulldogs (6-2). … Nathan Shea scored 21 points to lead Deer Park to a 60-42 victory over host Newport. Ramey shot 5 of 6 from 3-point range for the Crusaders (7-1, 5-1), while Richardson shot 10 of 14 from the floor. Josh Pope scored 14 to lead the Panthers (6-2, 4-2). … Greg Giese scored 15 points to lead Almira/Coulee-Hartline to a 45-24 victory over Davenport in Hartline.
