Seven-year-old Hannah Dutton of Spokane enjoys drawing. She also likes origami, doing puzzles, singing and dancing, but drawing is what caught the eyes of the folks at Highlights for Children.

Dutton’s illustration, “A Fireworks Concert (My Daddy Conducts it)” is featured in the January issue of the magazine in its “Your Own Pages” section. According to magazine officials, kids send in more than 35,000 submissions (art, poetry, jokes, etc.) each year and less than 2 percent of them get picked for publication due to space constraints.

In the picture, it looks like Hannah’s daddy, David, is conducting the concert from the floating stage at Riverfront Park.

The All Saints Elementary School student is planning to become an artist when she grows up.

Eating together

According to survey results reported by Kids Post, a feature of The Washington Post, more than half of kids ages 6 to 11 say they eat a meal as a family six or seven days a week.

The survey, conducted by Child Trends, showed that 25 percent eat meals with their families four or five days a week and 20 percent do so zero to three days a week.

The numbers drop for teenagers, with only 42 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds sharing family mealtime six to seven days a week and 27 percent doing so four or five days a week. Thirty-one percent of teenagers surveyed reported eating meals together three days a week or fewer.
