The Spokesman-Review

YAKIMA – Two unearned runs and a solo homer added up to a 3-1 win for the Yakima Bears over the Spokane Indians Friday night in Northwest League baseball.

The Indians’ lone run came in the fourth inning. Chad Tracy opened with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Steve Marquardt’s sacrifice fly. Thomas Berkery (3 for 4) followed with a triple but was stranded.

Yakima took the lead in the third inning with an unearned run as Jason Watson reached first on an error by Berkery at shortstop and eventually scored from second on a base hit.

The Bears took the lead in the sixth on a two-out homer by Shane Byrne, grandson of former major leaguer Tommy Byrne. They added an insurance run in the seventh as Blake Sharpe singled and eventually scored from third on an error by first baseman Chris Kemp.

Mike Ballard (0-2) went 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits. He and reliever Glen Swanson walked no one.
