Because landscaping should be enjoyed (as well as admired), every outdoor space needs a shady place to “stop and smell the roses.” That’s what makes this handsome do-it-yourself trellis bench such a great summer project.

The project creates a romantic focal point for any landscape. It features a wide, comfortable seat, integral planters and trellises (perfect for flowering vines or climbing roses) and an elegantly curved roof.

What you need

Easy enough for beginners, the bench calls for mostly straight cuts of standard lumber, and its curved cuts are traced from full-size patterns. To build, simply trace the parts onto wood, cut out, sand and assemble with screws, nails and carriage bolts.

What you do

The bench may be painted as pictured, finished clear or stained. For an extra touch of comfort, a cushion may be added to the seat.

The trellis bench measures about 74 inches tall by 60 inches long by 29 inches deep.

The Trellis Bench plan, No. 923, is $9.95 and includes full-size traceable patterns, step-by-step directions with photos, detailed construction diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions.

How to order the plan

A package of outdoor furniture plans, No. C94, is $25.95 and includes plans for an outdoor rocking chair, a lawn glider swing, a glider settee and a tree seat. A catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects is $2. Please include $4 for postage and handling (except catalog-only orders) and allow about two weeks for delivery.
