NIC players earn academic awards

Two North Idaho College women’s basketball players were recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Academic All-America Team.

Sara Dennehy of Redmond, Wash., earned a 3.63 cumulative grade point average while studying business.

She plans to attend the University of Idaho this fall on a basketball scholarship.

Caitlin Courchaine of Spokane also earned a 3.63 GPA for the season while working toward a general studies degree.

She plans to attend Carroll College this fall on a basketball scholarship.

College scene

University of Idaho kicker Mike Barrow was selected by College Football News as the preseason Western Athletic Conference first-team kicker and punter.

Barrow joins teammate Jayson Bird on the first-team offense.

Barrow connected on 16 of 19 field goals for a league-leading 84.2 percent last season. He also made 21 of 23 PATs.

Bird, from Shelley, Idaho, led the Vandals in rushing as a true freshman in 2004 before breaking his collarbone in the third game of the 2005 season.

•Eastern Washington University junior lineman Matt Alfred and Rocky Hanni have been selected as preseason All-Americans by The Sports Network and its “Executive Director of Division I-AA Football,” Matt Dougherty.

Alfred, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound guard out of Gig Harbor, Wash., was selected to the first team while Hanni, a 6-5, 290-pound Sumner, Wash., product earned honorable mention.

Track and field

University of Idaho’s Driss Yousfi broke the school record in the 800 meters last week in Belgium.

He was timed in 1 minute, 47.11 seconds to break Leroy Robinson’s time of 1:47.16, set 24 years ago.

Yousfi competed in the B section of the IAAF Golden League Meet at Paris yesterday.

Miscellany

A presale of single game tickets to each of the University of Washington’s six home games during the upcoming 2006 season will begin Wednesday.

The special Internet-only presale will begin at noon via the athletic department’s official Web site, www.gohuskies.com.

Tickets can be purchased over the telephone or in person at the Husky Athletic Ticket Office beginning at 8:30 a.m. on July 17.
