Achievements: Junior League honors pair

The Junior League of Spokane recently announced the recipients of its annual Sustainer of the Year and Active of the Year awards.

Trish McFarland was named Sustainer of the Year. She currently is working with the YWCA domestic violence program.

Michelle Grady was selected as Active of the Year. She served as the organization’s funding vice president, helped develop the group’s new cookbook and managed the annual rummage sale.

“Brett Seefeldt recently graduated from the Army Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Ala., and was appointed to the rank of warrant officer one. Seefeldt has served in the military for nine years and is a multiple-launch rocket system operations/fire-direction specialist. A 1997 graduate of University High School, he is the son of Doug and Debbie Seefeldt of Corpus Christi, Texas.

“Catherine Skaggs of Spokane was recently named to the spring dean’s list at Carroll College in Montana. A student must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to be named to the list.

“Tessa Leach of Spokane was recently named to the spring dean’s list at Benedictine College in Kansas. A student must hold a grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.9 to be named to the list.

“Two local students recently graduated from Johnson and Wales University. Mary Gleason of Spokane received an associate degree in equine studies. Katelyn Rice of Nine Mile Falls earned an associate degree in advertising/communications.

“Jennifer Bledsoe recently graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies. Bledsoe, a graduate of East Valley High School, is the daughter of Jim and Denise Bledsoe.

“Several Gonzaga University engineering students won first place in the recent National Student Steel Bridge Competition in Salt Lake City. The team won first place in the lightness category as well as 11th for efficiency and 13th overall. The team included Richard Mahn, Justin Patterson, Dan Robledo, Todd Schoentrup and Daniel Sumerfield. The team had previously won the regional competition to qualify for the national competition. Its winning design is on display in the Herak Engineering Center on the Gonzaga campus.

“Several area residents recently graduated from Linfield College in Oregon. All degrees are bachelor degrees, and the focus of each degree is listed.

Potlatch: Sydney Osborne, exercise science.

Rathdrum: Rachael Bertsch, mass communication.

Spokane: Jordan Baines, philosophy; Cassandra Brulotte-Merryman, sociology; and Mary Eash, exercise science.

In addition, Cassandra Brulotte-Merryman earned department honors in sociology and anthropology.

“Jessica Wilson of Mead recently received the Thomas and Emily Hardie Award at Linfield College. The award is given annually to a student who has shown a willingness to be challenged by injustice, apathy and ignorance.

“Nicole Pariseau of Liberty Lake was recently named to the spring dean’s list at Gonzaga University. A student must hold a grade-point average between 3.5 and 3.69 to be named to the list.

“Nicole Scheer of Pullman was recently named to the spring dean’s list at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. A student must hold a grade-point average of 3.4 or above to be named to the list.

“Elizabeth Maas was recently promoted to captain in the Air Force. Maas, a 1997 graduate of Ferris High School, is the daughter of Milton and Linda Maas of Spokane. She is currently stationed at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida.

“Joshua Stowell recently earned a juris doctor degree in law from Duke University. Stowell, a graduate of North Central High School, is the son of Scott and Nancy Stowell of Spokane.

“Keith McCoy recently graduated from Oregon State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
