Community Center programs ongoing

Even though summer is traditionally the slowest time at the Spokane Valley Community Center, there are still projects that require attention right now.

The center is working on its school supplies program, in which children receive free supplies as long as the families attend a life-skills class, said center assistant director Sharon Hengy.

The center is collecting school supplies of all types in barrels at Valley fire stations and a few churches, Hengy said. Residents also can bring supplies to the community center at 10814 E. Broadway Ave.

The supplies will be distributed at an Aug. 23 event, in which the Ronald McDonald Caremobile will be present to provide kids with free shots and medical care. There also will be free haircuts for children available, and Operation Family ID will be present.

“We’re still needing volunteers for the event,” Hengy said.

Last year between 1,500 and 1,700 kids attended, Hengy said.
