Winey, Williams win CCS’ June awards

Community Colleges of Spokane recently announced its male and female scholar-athletes for June.

Kara Winey, a graduate of Post Falls High School, was the female recipient. Winey, a freshman on the CCS golf team, led the Sasquatch with individual first-place finishes at the Treasure Valley Invitational, the Concordia Invitational and a match against North Idaho College. Winey was also named to the 2006 Eastern Region All-Star team and was awarded the team medalist honor.

Elvie Williams, who attended high school in Spanaway, Wash., earned the male award. Williams, who is a track and field athlete at CCS, was also part of the Sasquatch basketball team last year. During the track season, Williams won the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet award by winning the long jump, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles, placing third in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

College scene

Four Eastern Washington University student-athletes who attended high school in the Spokane area have been named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the spring quarter.

The four, including their sport and where they went to high school: Alex Moon, track and field, Shadle Park; Teanna Meinhold, track and field, Colville; Bonnie Millard, track and field, Priest River; and Marie Carroll, tennis, Gonzaga Prep.

•Washington State University was among the 75 Division I women’s track and field teams that had a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and was honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for its academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2006 indoor and outdoor track season.

The Cougars finished with a 3.19 GPA for the spring quarter.

Alicia Mills, a 2003 Central Valley graduate, has been named to the 2006 Big Sky Conference Spring All-Academic team. Mills, a junior who throws the javelin for the University of Montana women’s outdoor track and field team, finished the spring quarter with a 3.44 GPA.

Volleyball

The University of Idaho will start the upcoming season ranked fourth in the Western Athletic Conference coaches’ preseason poll.

The Vandals received 43 votes, five less than third-place Nevada.

Miscellany

Tony Leonetti, an aspiring NHL hockey referee out of Spokane, was recently invited to the Elite Officiating Experience in Lake Placid, N.Y., where he will officiate games for national teams trying to earn a trip to the World Junior Championships.

Leonetti, a 2002 Shadle Park High graduate, began his officiating career at age 15. During the last two years, he has been an official for the East Coast League and the Western Hockey League. Because of his involvement with the Elite Officiating Experience, he will be given a chance to earn a spot on the officiating crew that will referee the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.

•The Inland Northwest Masters Track and Field Classic will be held Saturday at Washington State University’s Mooberry Track in Pullman. Events start at 10:30 a.m. with the javelin throw and the 10,000-meter run.

Late entries can be submitted until meet day. Participants must be at least 19 years old and have a USA Track and Field membership. Those interested can join on-site for $15.
