There are plenty of ways, places to keep the kids amused

The Spokesman-Review

In addition to story times, there are many other ways to keep the kids entertained without forking over big bucks.

“Check out local pet stores like Northwest Seed and Pet. They have puppies and kittens for the kids to pet as well as more exotic animals to visit.

“Look for fast-food restaurants that have ice cream treats for under a dollar. The ones with play structures for the kids give more bang for your buck.

“Buy a low-cost sprinkler for hours of water fun. Water your lawn and entertain the kids at the same time.

“Hold a backyard scavenger hunt. Draw pictures of hidden items so even pre-readers can play. You can hide household items and give clues or just make use of what’s already outside. The most important thing is to have a box of popsicles ready at the end. The kid who finds the most items gets two.

“Let the kids have a lemonade stand. Whether they make any money or not, it will keep them busy and teach them about free enterprise.

“Grab the sunscreen and go to Shadle Park’s water playground.

“Explore area bookstores. Many offer storytimes and free activities.

“Escape the heat at the Garland Theater. If offers free movies Monday through Friday mornings at 9:30. Go to www.garlandtheatre.com for more information.

“Head for the Spokane Valley Mall Theaters. They offer free movies Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Visit www.spokanevalleymall.com and click “events” to find out more.

“Take the kids to vacation Bible school. Dozens of local churches host them, and they’re usually free. Check the Voice each week for more information.
