■ U.S. involvement: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said she would work with allies in the region to help create conditions for “stability and lasting peace.” She ruled out a quick cease-fire and defended her decision not to talk to Hezbollah or Syria.

■ The conflict: Israel warned civilians to flee Hezbollah- controlled southern Lebanon as it prepared for a likely ground invasion to set up a deep buffer zone.

■ Pope keeps distance: Pope Benedict XVI said he does not plan to intervene in the fighting, but called on people of all religions to join Sunday’s worldwide day of prayers for peace.
