Whitman College announces graduates from area

Several area students recently graduated with bachelor’s degrees from Whitman College in Walla Walla. Graduates are listed by their hometown.

Coeur d’Alene: Hillary Chisholm, art history and visual culture studies.

Hayden Lake: Christopher Iacoboni, biology-geology.

Spokane: Emily Arneson, sociology; Lydia Eberly, Asian studies; Kaylin Greene, psychology; Caleb Kytonen, philosophy; Kara Mackenzie, history; Kyla Schupman, English; and Jamie Zappone, pure mathematics.

“Lee Kaelin of East Valley High School was recently selected to attend the Presidential Classroom’s Entrepreneurship and Global Business Program in Washington, D.C. The program is open to high school juniors and seniors who hold a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. Those selected spent a week exploring the relationship between government and the private sector.

“Marine Corps Pvt. Philip Shiplett recently graduated from the Marine Corps basic training center in San Diego. Shiplett, a 2004 graduate of Lake City High School, is the son of Beverly and Stuart Denny, and Brian Shiplett, all of Coeur d’Alene.

“Air Force Airman 1st Class Sara Fitzpatrick recently graduated from the air traffic control operations apprentice course at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. Fitzpatrick is a 1998 graduate of Mead High School and a 2005 graduate of Eastern Washington University. She is the daughter of Sue Fitzpatrick of Mead and Terry Fitzpatrick of Wenatchee.

“Shannon Buck recently graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs with a bachelor’s degree in biology and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. Buck is the son of Donald and Patti Buck of Colbert.

“Heidi Sedra of Newman Lake was recently named to the president’s list at Gonzaga University. A student must hold a grade-point average of 3.7 or above to be named to the list.

“Jessica Knudsen of Spokane recently earned a Master of Education in creative arts in learning from Lesley University, Mass. Knudsen, who also holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University, is currently a teacher at Rogers High School.

“Brent Reser and Christopher Schillios, both of Spokane, were recently named to the dean’s list at the University of Montana, Missoula. Students must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to be eligible to the list.

Idaho

“Victor McFarland of Coeur d’Alene recently graduated with distinction from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in history. He also was awarded the Hines Prize for the best undergraduate research thesis in history. McFarland, a 2002 graduate of Gonzaga Prep, is the son of Barbara and Robert McFarland of Coeur d’Alene.

“Brenda Stephenson of Coeur d’Alene was recently named to the dean’s list at Carroll College, Helena. A student must hold a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to be named to the list.
