UI wildlife professor cited for distinguished service

University of Idaho wildlife Professor J. Michael Scott was recently awarded the Interior Department’s Distinguished Service Award, the highest departmental award that can be given to a career employee. Scott is a senior scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He has been a federal biologist since 1974 and has been the unit leader of the Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit since 1986.

“Air Force Airman Heather Schoenberger recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Schoenberger, a 2005 graduate of West Valley High School, is the daughter of Michael and Holly Schoenberger of Spokane Valley.

“Area students have been awarded scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year at Washington State University.

Margaret Cahalan received a $500 Honors College M.E. and Maxine Johnson Scholarship. Cahalan, a 2004 graduate of West Valley High School, is studying architecture. She is the daughter of Jodee and Randy Cahalan of Spokane.

Christopher Hensz received a $8,000 Academic Achievement/Diversity Scholarship, a $2,000 Science Opportunity Scholarship and a $2,500 University Achievement Award. Hensz, a senior at North Central High School, is the son of Nancye and Michael Hensz of Spokane.

Janelle Myers received a $400 Fisher Scholarship Fund Scholarship. Myers, a 2001 graduate of the Upper Columbia Academy, is the daughter of Cynthia Miller and Frank Myers of Spokane. She is studying construction management.

Andrea Read received a $1,000 Burger Scholarship Fund Scholarship. Read, who is studying architecture, is the daughter of Linda and Terry Read of Spokane. She is a 2000 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Kreg Shelby received a $500 Satterthwaite Scholarship Fund Scholarship. Shelby, a 1999 graduate of Ferris High School, is studying construction management. He is the son of Jan and Mark Shelby of Spokane.

Stacie Schultz received a $3,000 Crimson Regents’ Scholarship. Schultz, a senior at Reardan High School, Reardan, Wash., is the daughter of Wendy and Joseph Schultz of Davenport, Wash.

Gillian West received a $400 Weller Scholarship Fund Scholarship. West, who is studying architecture, is a 2003 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School. She is the daughter of Elizabeth West and the late Corbett West of Spokane.

Eric Williams received a $350 Gamson Scholarship Fund Scholarship. Williams, the son of Kathy and Glenn Williams of Colbert, is a 2002 graduate of Mead High School. He is studying architecture and construction management.

“The Central Valley PTSA Council recently announced the winners of its Memorial Scholarships. Recipients were selected based on personal achievement, financial need and community service. Amanda Rutherford of University and Tabitha Bartholomew of Central Valley high schools each were awarded $1,000 scholarships. Alyssa Christianson of Central Valley and Teri Zupon of Barker Center were awarded $500 scholarships.

“Courtney Van Winkle of Spokane Valley was recently named a national award winner in speech and drama by the U.S. Achievements Academy. Recipients are recommended by a teacher or coach and the award is based on academic performance, leadership and citizenship. Van Winkle, a student at East Valley High School, is the daughter of Laurie Van Winkle of Spokane Valley.

“Aileen Dean of North Central and Christopher Ranney of Mt Spokane high schools have been named recipients of $1,000 scholarships from ShopKo as part of the ShopKo Scholars program. The awards were given to 100 students out of more than 3,000 who applied based on academics, leadership and community activities. Students must live within 100 miles of a ShopKo store.

Dean is the daughter of Doug and Sue Dean of Spokane. Ranney is the son of Gary and Elizabeth Ranney of Spokane.

“Jennifer Cantrell has been selected as the winner of the $1,000 Joseph Heslin Foundation Scholarship. The award is given annually to a Shadle Park High School student. Cantrell is a senior and plans to attend Western Washington University.
