Spear’s Home Furnishings will close

A 37-year-old store that sold furnishings made by Lexington Home Brands, Norwalk Furniture and other upper-end companies is closing.

Spear’s Home Furnishings, at 1300 N. Argonne, will start liquidating its merchandise on June 16 and will close soon after, a news release from storeowner Bruce McEachran said.

McEachran, who also owns Burgans Fine Furniture Store, was unavailable for comment on Thursday.

Donald Spear and his wife opened B& H Better Homes Furnishings on North Monroe around 1970. In 1982, the couple sold the store to their son-in-law, William “Bill” Snow. A decade later, Snow moved the business to its current location in Spokane Valley. E. S. Burgans and Sons purchased Spear’s a few years ago.

Although Spear’s is closing, Capel Rug Gallery, which is owned by McEachran and operates in the same building, will stay open.

“The Capel store is going to stay right where it is and continue business as usual,” said its general manager, Steve Harmon.

Although the store does gain customers from being located next to Spear’s, it’s also doing okay on its own, Harmon said, adding, “It will be a little bit of a challenge.”

The opening of the nearby Everett Gallery and the presence of several other small home-focused businesses will help the store weather the loss of Spear’s, he said.
