Scooter rider killed in hit-and-run

The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane man was killed Friday night after a speeding car ran him over and fled the scene, according to Spokane Valley police.

Robb Long, 29, died immediately after he was struck by a silver vehicle on Sprague Avenue underneath the Interstate 90 overpass in Spokane Valley.

Police are now searching for the driver who ran a red light before hitting Long at around 8:40 p.m.

Witnesses on the scene described the vehicle as a silver passenger car with the style or shape of an early 2000 Dodge Intrepid. It had tinted windows and was driven by a man. Police said the vehicle likely has some front-end damage.

The car was westbound on Sprague Avenue and crossed the median near the I-90 overpass, according to police. Long, who was operating a 2004 Qianjiang motor scooter, was eastbound on Sprague. To avoid getting hit by the oncoming car, he got off the scooter and set it down on the ground, witnesses told police. The car didn’t hit the scooter, but it struck Long. The driver then headed west on I-90.

Anyone with information regarding this hit-and-run is asked to call the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office at (509) 242-TIPS.

Fire destroys two-story home

A fire destroyed a house in Chattaroy on Friday night.

The garage and a significant portion of the two-story home were already engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived at 23039 N. Crescent Road, said Deputy Chief Dave Phillips of Spokane County Fire District 4.

About 20 firefighters from the north Spokane County district responded to the blaze, which was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m.

No one was injured, but the family who lived in the house is now staying with relatives in the area, Phillips said.

It took about an hour to quell the flames, and a crew remained overnight to ensure that the fire was completely out. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, Phillips said.
