Golf Universe store to open at Sprague and Sullivan

By The Spokesman-Review

A new golf store is on par to open just in time for the upcoming golf season.

Golf Universe, a discount golf retailer, plans to open in 10,000 square feet of space at Sprague Avenue and Sullivan Road on April 1.

“We thought Spokane Valley was an excellent location and there’s a lot of growth” said storeowner Jason Sleater, who has operated a Golf Universe in Kennewick, Wash., for 12 years.

The store is opening in a retail complex adjacent to Fred Meyer that’s owned by GVD Commercial Properties Inc. Other tenants there include FedEx Kinko’s and 50 Percent Off Card Shop.

Golf Universe offers discounted selections of apparel and equipment. Golfers can also experience a virtual golf simulator.

The store will employ Tom Ratkovich as manager, Sleater said, adding, “he has been selling clubs in the Spokane market for 17 years.”

Ryan Goodell, project manager for GVD Commercial Properties Inc., said the company purchased the retail center last July. It renovated the façade and built out stores for Golf Universe and for Woodcraft, a national woodworking specialty store that recently located there.

The company has operations in California and locally, with a dozen projects going on throughout the Northwest.

GVD recently received a permit to build an 8,000-square-foot retail center at 5004 E. Sprague, next to Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse in Spokane Valley.

Goodell said the project is expected to break ground in the next couple weeks and wrap up sometime in June.

Rush Hour Espresso, a locally owned business, will occupy one suite with indoor and patio seating and a drive-through window, Goodell said.

GVD is finalizing paperwork for an as-yet-undisclosed retailer that will lease 5,500 square feet of space there, he said.
