Gomez guides Devils to shootout win over Capitals

Scott Gomez scored twice, Patrik Elias got three assists in his first game since the Olympics, and the New Jersey Devils won a five-round shootout Friday night to beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 in Washington.

Viktor Kozlov, Gomez and Sergei Brylin scored for the Devils in the shootout, which was decided when goaltender Martin Brodeur stopped Ben Clymer’s attempt in round five. Brian Willsie and Brooks Laich scored for the Capitals.

Islanders 2, Maple Leafs 1 (SO): Rick DiPietro stopped Darcy Tucker in the shootout and New York beat Toronto in Uniondale, N.Y. Miroslav Satan scored the only goal in the tiebreaker. Toronto’s Bryan McCabe – a former Spokane Chief – scored a second-period goal.

Senators 3, Thrashers 1: Daniel Alfredsson opened Ottawa’s three-goal flurry in the first 5:02, and the Senators won in Atlanta.

Panthers 5, Hurricanes 3: Olli Jokinen scored two goals and Florida beat Carolina in Sunrise, Fla.

Blues 2, Wild 1 (OT): Rookie Lee Stempniak scored on a deflection 25 seconds into overtime, giving the Blues a victory over Minnesota in St. Louis.

Boston defenseman Nick Boynton was suspended for a game without pay by the NHL for making a threatening gesture toward Montreal’s Mike Ribeiro during a game Thursday. … Phoenix recalled rookie defenseman Matt Jones from San Antonio of the AHL.
