Central Pre-Mix, Inland Asphalt to go under same roof

CPM Development Corp. is building a $1.3 million addition so it can bring its Inland Asphalt operations under the same roof.

“It’s pretty much doubling the square footage of our current building,” said Mark Murphy, president of Central Pre-Mix Concrete Co. and vice president of CPM.

The company has several divisions and owns its headquarters at 5111 E. Broadway, but leases space nearby for Inland Asphalt Co. The construction project will add 11,000 square feet of space to accommodate Inland Asphalt’s offices and allow accounting and support services to expand, Murphy said.

Schimmels Construction is doing the work.

Central Pre-Mix was founded 76 years ago by Murphy’s great-grandfather, William Murphy. The business was purchased by Oldcastle Materials, Inc. in 1997, but retained its locally recognized names.

“We’ve grown substantially. We’ve more than doubled (sales) in the last eight years,” Mark Murphy said.

Although there’s a push to finish office space in CPM’s new addition, a portion of the basement will be left unfinished and dedicated to future growth.

“We’re going to finish the office space right away to get Inland Asphalt over here,” Murphy said. “It’s like building a house. You hope to finish the basement off someday.”
