The Spokesman-Review

Whitworth senior Kristi Dickey has been named the 2006 NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year for the West Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the school announced Tuesday.

Dickey ran the 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 44 seconds at the University of Idaho McDonald’s Open in February – the fastest time in the region this winter.

Baseball

Andy Underwood pitched eight-plus innings to lead host Fresno State (15-8) to a 5-1 win over Gonzaga in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic at Fresno, Calif.

Underwood (4-2) took a shutout into the ninth, but the Bulldogs (11-9) loaded the bases with no outs on Aaron McGuinness’ single, Scott Campbell’s walk and a hit batter on Darin Holcomb. After an out, Brandon Miller relieved Underwood and ended the threat with Zach Woodward’s RBI groundout and a flyout.

Beau Mills’ two-run triple in the sixth off Josh Monroe (2-2) broke a scoreless tie.

Earlier in the day at Fresno, Washington State’s game against Binghamton was postponed because of rain. The teams will attempt to reschedule the game during the tournament, which ends Saturday.

Softball

Jennifer Eckhoff, a Whitworth sophomore, is the Northwest Conference pitcher of the week. She went 2-0 at Pacific Lutheran with two complete games. She allowed one run in 15 innings (0.47 ERA) on 10 hits, striking out 10 and walking three.

“North Idaho’s non-conference home doubleheader against Walla Walla was postponed by rain until March 22.

Golf

Anastasia Kostina tied for third and Amy Eneroth tied for 10th while leading Washington State to a fifth-place finish at the 19-team Pinehurst (N.C.) Challenge.

Kostina finished three rounds at Pinehurst Golf Course at 8-over-par 224, three shots behind medalist Michelle Jarman of UNC-Wilmington. Freshman Eneroth (Mead High) shot 230.

WSU’s 935 trailed champion Maryland by 18 shots.

“Whitworth sophomore Andrew Parrott is the NWC golfer of the week after finishing as the top individual at the University of Puget Sound Invite with a two-day score of 150.

He also led the Pirates to a come-from-behind win in the team competition, winning by five strokes over Pacific Lutheran.

Women’s basketball

University of Idaho guard Leilani Mitchell has been selected as a finalist for the Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-American basketball team in Division I.

Mitchell is one of 48 finalists and one of six players selected from Region 7, which includes the Big Sky, Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences.
