Lela Ida (Granger) Pollin

Usk, Wash.

Lela Ida (Granger) Pollin recently turned 100 years old.

Born March 6, 1906, in a farmhouse in Douglas County, Wash., she has been a lifelong resident of Eastern Washington.

She is described as being a very cheerful person. Her favorite food is fried chicken, and she celebrated her birthday this year with a luncheon at KFC.

She was married for 49 years to Carrol Pollin, whom she met at a dance. They owned and operated Nine Mile Dairy during World War II. They had a son, Lee, who today lives with her in Usk, Wash. Her husband died in 1979.

Pollin loves to sing, especially country music. She has most often performed for the Grange, in which she has been a member for more than 75 years, and occasionally would sing for lodges. She says singing for family and friends is her most rewarding life achievement.

She attributes her longevity to hard work, not smoking or drinking alcohol, and eating in moderation.

The most memorable event in the past 100 years, she said, was when man landed on the moon and then returned to Earth.
