Cougs rout GU at Johnny Quik Classic

Zach McAngus hit a two-run double and Jim Murphy added a two-run single in a five-run fifth inning as Washington State routed Gonzaga 15-3 at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic baseball tournament Saturday morning in Fresno, Calif.

The Cougars scored five runs in the fifth off Bulldogs starter Patrick Donovan to break open a 3-2 game, then tacked on seven more in the ninth to seal the victory. Jared Prince had a pair of hits in the ninth, finishing the game with three hits and five RBIs.

Gonzaga quickly responded to the loss with a 12-1, seven-inning victory over Binghamton (2-5-1) to close its tournament with a 3-3 mark.

Zach Woodward hit a two-run single to cap a four-run first for the Bulldogs (14-10), and Darin Holcomb hit a three-run double in a five-run third. Clayton Mortensen threw five innings of one-hit ball to earn the win.

In the Cougars’ nightcap, Geoff Orr had four hits to lead Miami (Ohio) to a 9-7 victory. The Redhawks (6-8) scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game out of reach, even though the Cougars (18-6) rallied for four runs in the ninth.

•Whitworth (7-10, 4-4) remained at .500 in Northwest Conference play by splitting Linfield (9-8, 3-2) in a doubleheader at McMinnville, Ore.

Brian Clark improved to 4-0 for Linfield in the opener, striking out seven and throwing a seven-hitter in the Wildcats’ 4-2 victory.

In the nightcap, Whitworth led wire-to-wire and sealed an 8-1 victory with a four-run eighth inning. Brandon Zimmerman (CC Spokane) threw a four-hitter for the Pirates, striking out four.

•Danny Brown hit a leadoff home run to right field in the top of the ninth inning to give Centralia a 2-1 victory over Community Colleges of Spokane to open a non-conference doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Luke Farden threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts as the Sasquatch (2-8) earned a 5-2 victory in seven innings. Kane Zalopany capped a four-run CCS fifth with an RBI single.

Track and field

Washington State seniors James McSwain and Martin Boston each won a pair of events at the Willie Williams Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

McSwain won the men’s 100-meter dash in 10.16 seconds, while Boston won the men’s triple jump with a distance of 49 feet, 3/4 inch. The pair also teamed with Justin Woods and Jaycee Robertson to win the 400 relay.

•Eastern Washington’s David Paul and CC Spokane’s Elvie Williams each won a pair of men’s events in the Dusty Lane Open at Spokane Community College. Paul won the discus with a throw of 168-1, and threw 203-2 to win the hammer throw. Williams won the 100 in 11.06 and the 110 hurdles in 15.26.

On the women’s side, Shannon Long of CCS won the 100 (12.80) and 200 (26.23), while EWU’s Carolee Geaudreau won the discus (143-0) and hammer (161-0).

Swimming

Washington State’s Erin McCleave finished 11th in the women’s 1,650 freestyle at the NCAA Division I championships in Athens, Ga., with a time of 16 minutes, 19.62 seconds.

Golf

Washington State junior Chris Collins finished in a tie for 14th at the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas, earning his sixth top-25 finish of the season and ninth of his career. WSU finished 11th out of 16 teams with Baylor taking the title.

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane earned three victories on the first day of the Pasco Invitational to improve to 5-2 on the season.

Morgan Thomsen (West Valley) went 3 for 4 with a two-run home run for CCS in a 12-1 victory over Highline in the opener. In the second game, Stephanie Day (Colville) hit 3 for 3 with a grand slam, another homer and eight RBIs as the Sasquatch blitzed Green River 27-1 in three innings. In the nightcap, Patti Jo Laabs hit a two-run double in the sixth as CCS defeated Mt. Hood 3-1.
