Man found dead in apartment identified

The Spokesman-Review

The man found dead in an apartment last week has been identified as John W. Stanley, 52, of Spokane.

Stanley died following a fight on March 14 at the Coeur d’Alene Plaza, 228 N. Howard St., Apt. 405, Spokane police spokesman Cpl. Tom Lee said.

He was with three other people when the argument occurred, Lee said. Police arrived and found him lying on the floor not breathing.

The autopsy did not reveal any obvious signs of death, Lee said. No arrests have been made in connection with Stanley’s death.

Photo shows woman suspected in robbery

Coeur d’Alene police have released a new surveillance photo of a pregnant woman suspected of robbing a downtown bank Monday.

The woman came into the Bank of America at 401 Front Ave. and reportedly told tellers she “had four kids to take care of and a fifth on the way,” before demanding cash.

She said she had a gun, but didn’t display one, Sgt. Christie Wood said.

The woman is described as in her mid-30s, 5 feet 9 inches tall, with “very blue eyes,” a fair complexion and dark hair pulled back in a bun. She was wearing a teal maternity top and white pants.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the tip line at (208) 769-2296.

Man pleads guilty to assault of boss

A 27-year-old Cheney man who faced kidnapping, robbery and first-degree assault charges pleaded guilty Tuesday to a reduced charge to avoid trial.

Paul Rodriguez, 27, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in connection with a brutal beating of his boss at the local Burger King on May 31, 2004.

Superior Court Judge Harold Clarke sentenced Rodriguez to five years in prison, minus the time he spent in the Spokane County Jail.

Rodriguez entered an Alford plea, which means he doesn’t believe he is guilty of the crime but acknowledges the prosecution has enough evidence to convict him.

The case went to trial in January and ended in a hung jury.

Rodriguez’s cousin, 19-year-old Luis Lara, also faces kidnapping, robbery and assault charges in connection with the attack on 22-year-old Nathan “Evan” Wood.

Dog that attacked boy held in quarantine

One of two pit bulls that attacked a 12-year-old Post Falls boy Thursday is being held in quarantine at the Post Falls Animal Shelter.

The other dog was shot by police the day of the attack after charging an officer. Police believed both dogs were hit and the one that didn’t die was wandering loose.

Post Falls police Lt. Scot Haug said police served a search warrant at 1120 N. Shannon Lane after hearing the pit bull inside.

Charges are pending against the dogs’ owner for allowing the dogs to run loose and for not licensing the dogs, Haug said. The owner of the dogs, 23-year-old Cody Tucker, was cited by Post Falls police in January for allowing the dogs to run loose.

Haug said the pit bull will be kept in quarantine for 10 days in case it has rabies and then police plan to declare the dog vicious. Under city code, the owners would have to keep the dog in a secure pen, post signs that the dog is vicious and carry $50,000 liability insurance in case the dog attacks again.
