The Spokesman-Review

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will speak at Eastern Washington University on May 24.

Albright, whose family left communist Czechoslovakia when she was a child, became the first woman to serve as secretary of state. She’s the fourth speaker in the school’s Presidential Speaker Series, which has included Polish Nobel Prize winner Lech Walesa and former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell.

Former President Bill Clinton named Albright secretary of state in 1997, and she served until 2001. She was also a staffer in the White House under President Jimmy Carter and has written several books, including a new one, “The Mighty and the Almighty – Reflections on America, God and World Affairs.” Before serving as secretary of state, she was an ambassador to the United Nations and Georgetown University professor, among other things.

She’ll speak at 1:30 p.m. May 24, at Reese Court in the EWU Special Events Pavilion in Cheney. She will address students beforehand at 10 a.m.
