Two jailed on firearms charges

After stopping a car Monday night for several traffic infractions as it sped away from a 7-Eleven store, police arrested two men on suspicion of stealing a gun just moments before.

Police arrested Michael S. McGuire, 24, for driving with a suspended license, Sgt. Dave Reagan said in a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

While checking to see if the passenger, Brian R. McGaugh, 22, owned the car, police learned that a pistol had been stolen at the convenience store.

According to the release, McGuire and McGaugh picked up the man with the pistol and drove to the 7-Eleven at 10:20 p.m. There, they tricked him into getting out of the car and drove off with his pistol, but they passed a police car when they left the parking lot.

Police found a pistol in the car and also learned that the suspects had previous felony convictions that make it illegal for them to possess firearms, Reagan said.

Both were booked into county jail on counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and theft of a firearm, according to the release.
