Annual Prayer Breakfast scheduled for Friday

The 45th annual Prayer Breakfast will be Friday at 7 a.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel at Spokane City Center, 322 N. Spokane Falls Court.

The keynote speaker will be Aaron Haskins, executive director of the Coalition for Community Development and Renewal in Seattle and a former basketball player at Washington State University.

Other speakers will include local radio talk show host Laurie Roth, who was in a serious motorcycle crash in August; Lilac Queen Zanie McMillan; U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris; and Spokane Valley Mayor Diana Wilhite.

Stephanie Vigil of KHQ-6 will be the master of ceremonies for the event, presented by Leadership Northwest.

Mother’s Day services

“ Many mothers have lost children in a variety of ways, and Manito Presbyterian Church, 401 E. 30th Ave., is holding a special Mother’s Day service for those women on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Candle lighting, silence, comforting music, Scripture reading and more will be included in this service that is meant to bring comfort to those in mourning.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan Ave., is celebrating Mother’s Day with red or white carnations for everyone at the service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. to honor mothers everywhere.

The service also will include “Mama, Do You Love Me?” an Inuit story, and an acted reading of the Woman at the Well from the Gospel of John.

Prayer gathering

The Religious Coalition for Equality, Inland Northwest Equality and the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive, are presenting a day of Prayer for Justice and Equality today at 7:30 p.m.

The groups will welcome everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender expression or choice of religion.

“ The Rev. Roger Bruggink and his wife, Lee, will speak at the Book Parlor, 1414 W. Broadway Ave., on Sunday at 7 p.m.

The Brugginks are missionaries who have lived in Oman and Yemen. They will speak on the topic, “Same Roots, Different Routes.”

“ The Rev. Tom Doyle, a Catholic priest, author and advocate of victims of priest sexual abuse, will speak Monday at 7 p.m. at Garland Avenue Alliance Church, 2011 W. Garland Ave.

Doyle will speak about treatment of victims of sexual abuse by the clergy, the culture of silence in the church and new directions the church must take in order to survive.

CYT presents ‘Seussical,’ ‘Stuart Little’

Members of the Christian Youth Theater will perform at two events this week.

The group will give a preview of its production of “Seussical,” a play based on books by Dr. Seuss, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave.

The troupe will perform its entire production May 26 through June 3 at the Met, but the preview performance on Saturday will include readings from Dr. Seuss books.

The theater will present “Stuart Little” May 19 at 7 p.m., May 20 at 3 and 7 p.m. and May 21 at 3 p.m. at the CYT Performing Arts Center, 708 W. Nora Ave.

Tickets for this show are $8 for adults and $7 for children 12 and younger and seniors in advance. All tickets will be $10 at the door.

New organ dedication

St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1325 E. Queen Ave., will present a mini-concert and organ dedication on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The organ will be dedicated to the memory of longtime parishioner and arts patron Isabel d’Urbal.

“ The youth group of Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will hold a flea market to benefit a mission trip to Slidell, La. The sale will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and there will be 43 vendors.

The youth will help victims of Hurricane Katrina finish building homes.
