Balmer guides LC State

Allen Balmer’s bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday gave Lewis-Clark State an 11-10 win over Embry-Riddle (Fla.) at the 50th annual Avista NAIA World Series in Lewiston.

LC State (45-8), which blew a 10-1 lead, will play British Columbia (49-14) today at 3 p.m.

Embry-Riddle (49-15), the No. 1 seed, was eliminated.

In the bottom of the ninth, Justin Fuller was hit by a pitch with one out, Matt Vogel singled, Jessie Mier was intentionally walked to load the bases setting the stage for Balmer.

Women’s golf

Washington State senior Anastasia Kostina earned her second consecutive All-American honorable mention honor last Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

Kostina, who had nine top-10 finishes this season, received the award from the National Golf Coaches Association.

Prep tennis

Brian Whipple and Bryceson Charlton of Sprague-Harrington placed sixth at last weekend’s State 1A/B tournament in Yakima. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Web site posted the incorrect sixth-place team Saturday.
