Politicians continue pre-election rallies

The Spokesman-Review

Candidates are moving into the last sprint to Election Day with rallies around the state.

Sen. Maria Cantwell joined other Democrats on Wednesday at Spokane’s East Central Community Center. In a later interview she refused to criticize Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry’s “botched joke” about people without an education winding up in Iraq.

In a separate statement, Democratic congressional candidate Peter Goldmark said he thought it was “regrettable” that Kerry had disparaged troops “who deserve nothing but praise and respect.”

Republicans have scheduled rallies on both sides of the state line today.

Today

3:30 p.m. Vice President Dick Cheney at a GOP Idaho Victory Rally. Cheney is scheduled to speak at 5:30 p.m. at Empire Aerospace at the Coeur d’Alene Airport. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. to allow time for security checks. Free tickets required from Kooetnai County GOP; information at (208) 765-8259.

5:45 p.m. Republican candidates, including Mike McGavick and Cathy McMorris, with former Sen. Slade Gorton and Dino Rossi will be at a GOP rally. Doubletree Inn, 322 N. Spokane Falls Court.

Friday

2 p.m. Goldmark will be at a press conference on school safety after a visit to University High School, 12420 E. 32nd Ave., Spokane Valley.

Meeting to address proposed bypass

Regional transportation planners will discuss a proposed North Idaho freeway running north from Interstate 90 in Post Falls to Highway 53 in Rathdrum.

The proposed Huetter bypass could carry 38,000 vehicles a day by 2030 if it’s built as currently envisioned. The plan calls for a high-speed, four-lane freeway with pedestrian and bike paths and a frontage road, mainly along the current route of Huetter Road.

People wishing to comment on the Huetter bypass right-of-way study can attend a Kootenai Metropolitan Planning Organization meeting at 1:30 p.m. today. The meeting is at the Idaho Transportation Department’s District One headquarters at 600 W. Prairie in Coeur d’Alene.
