Prices, output up mine earnings

The Spokesman-Review

Higher prices for gold and silver, along with increased output, gave Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp.’s third-quarter earnings a boost.

On Monday, the company reported third-quarter income of $18.4 million, or 6 cents per share, compared with income of $3.5 million, or 1 cent per share, for the same period in 2005.

Production picked up at four of the company’s five mines during the quarter, said Coeur d’Alene Mines’ Chairman Dennis Wheeler. Improved metals prices also helped the company’s bottom line.

In other news, Wheeler said the company spent nearly $42 million during the quarter at its Kensington gold mine in southwest Alaska. The mine is scheduled to open in late 2007.

Coeur d’Alene Mines reported $65.3 million in net income during the first nine months of the year. The results included $11 million from the sale of its Galena Mine and other Silver Valley assets. During the first nine months of 2005, the company reported income of $600,000.

Boeing exec gives big to WSU

Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ new president and CEO has given $1 million to Washington State University’s business school.

Scott Carson, with his wife, Linda Carson, donated the money to help “internationalize” WSU’s business programs, the school said in a press release. Carson received a business administration degree from WSU in 1972. The money will establish a scholarship fund for students participating in the business school’s international education programs.

Carson was named to the top job at Boeing Commercial Airplanes in September after former CEO Alan Mulally left to become chief executive of Ford Motor Co.

Spitzer was one of four Catholic leaders nationally who received awards. The institute noted his “dynamic resumé” that includes interests in accounting, finance, theology, physics, metaphysics and ethics.
