Paterno goes home

Penn State coach Joe Paterno turned into an armchair quarterback Saturday for the first time in nearly three decades.

Paterno was at home a day after being released from the hospital, and was expected to watch his team on television. The game against Temple at State College, Pa., was the Nittany Lions’ first without the 79-year-old Paterno since 1977.

Paterno was released Friday night from Mount Nittany Medical Center, five days after an operation to repair a broken shinbone and two torn knee ligaments in his left leg.

Two players ran into Paterno along the sideline in a game last weekend at Wisconsin. Paterno relented to doctors’ orders Thursday and told his assistants that he would skip the game to concentrate on his recovery. Doctors said he continues to improve.

One for the record books

Jimmy Terwilliger tied the NCAA record for career touchdown passes, leading East Stroudsburg to a 56-16 win over Kutztown in East Stroudsburg, Pa.

Terwilliger, the Harlon Hill Trophy winner as the top Division II player last year, threw eight touchdown passes to bring his career total to 148, tying the record for all divisions held by Justin Peery of Division III Westminster, Mo.

A four-year starter at East Stroudsburg (7-4), Terwilliger threw for 327 yards and rushed for 45 to finish his career with 16,064 yards of total offense, good for third in NCAA history behind Timmy Chang of Hawaii and Steve McNair of Alcorn State.

Streaking

Darren McFadden ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns and threw for a score to lead No. 11 Arkansas to its ninth straight win, 31-14 over No. 13 Tennessee. The streak is the Razorbacks’ longest since 1988. … Duke dropped its 18th straight game – the longest current skid in Division I-A – with a 28-7 loss to No. 22 Boston College. The Blue Devils also lost their 22nd consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference game and their 28th in the conference on the road. … Fresno State handed New Mexico State its 21st straight loss to a Division I-A opponent, beating the Aggies 23-18.

Bowden gets blanked

No. 18 Wake Forest beat Florida State 30-0 to become the first team to shut out the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Bobby Bowden’s 31 seasons as coach. The Demon Deacons, who last won in Tallahassee in 1959, improved to 9-1 for the first time in school history with their first win over Florida State in 23 years. The Seminoles hadn’t been shut out in 232 games, dating back to 1988.
