Morris leads Portland past Idaho
Portland freshmanguard Kendra Morris scored a career-high 19 points as the Pilots beat Idaho 83-56 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Tuesday night in Portland.
Morris was 7 of 12 from the field and hit three of five from behind the arc. She also dished out three assists.
Liz Witte scored 19 for the Vandals, who shot just 34 percent from the field. Katie Madison added 12 points and seven rebounds for Idaho.
Portland was dominant in the paint, outscoring the Vandals 44-24 in the key. The Pilots also held a 38-34 advantage in rebounds.
Portland improves its record to 2-0 while Idaho drops to 0-1.
Marquette 78, Washington 61: At Milwaukee, Krystal Ellis scored 24 points to lead the Golden Eagles to a victory over the Huskies in the season opener for both teams.
Danielle Kamm had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Marquette, and Svetlana Kovalenko added 13 points.
Cameo Hicks had 12 points and Jill Bell 10 to lead Washington, which was whistled for 32 fouls to only 19 for Marquette.
Washington missed 18 of its first 26 shots and committed 11 first-half turnovers while falling behind 40-29 at halftime.
(10) LSU 70, Virginia Tech 40: At Baton Rouge, La., Sylvia Fowles scored 14 points and added eight rebounds in only 23 minutes as the Lady Tigers beat the Hokies in the final game of the Basketball Travelers’ Classic.
Fowles, who had 18 points and 14 rebounds in a victory over Howard a night earlier, sat with 10:11 remaining in the game and LSU leading 62-28. She was named the top player in the three-day round robin.
Quianna Chaney added 12 points for LSU.
Kirby Copeland led Virginia Tech with 14 points and was the only player on her team to reach double figures as LSU held Virginia Tech to 33.3 percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers.
