GSL Preview Girls basketball
How about that talent?
Seven Division I recruits spread among half-dozen teams make for the most balanced look in GSL history. Angie Bjorklund at U-Hi, Katelan Redmon and Lyndi Seidensticker at LC, Kelli Valentine at Mead, Lexi Bishop at Shadle, Tara Cronin at G-Prep and Jenna Galloway at Ferris are a testament to a league filled with athleticism.
Keeping an eye on…
Can CV point guard Justine Bowman carry a young team and keep Bears playoff tradition going? Eleaya Schuerch is a talent for 3A state hopeful East Valley. New coach Juli Kistler is following a legend, Jeanne Helfer, at Mt. Spokane. And can this be the year that Rogers, with five veterans including Denisha Whitehead and D’Erica Jones, discovers the joy of victory?
Through the looking glass
The league may not be as strong at the top as last year, but we’ve heard that before. GSL girls basketball has been producing state quality teams for over a decade and this year will be no exception.
“Each year is a different group,” said LC coach Jim Redmon. “I just think the focus has to be on getting better every game and playing well at the right time.”
If nothing else, this year’s league appears deeper. Everybody plays each other twice with no non-league preparatory games, which didn’t sit well with all coaches.
“There are no cupcakes,” said Gonzaga coach Mike Arte. “It’s going to be an interesting 20-game schedule.”
