MSU set to offer studies for Turks

Montana State University has won approval of a program to bring students from Turkey to study bioengineering in Bozeman.

The Board of Regents approved MSU’s proposal to offer a new bachelor’s degree program to students from Istanbul Technical University.

Students will study in Istanbul during their first and third years, and in Bozeman during their second and fourth years. They will have to satisfy requirements of both universities and will graduate with dual degrees from both universities.

Between 30 and 40 Turkish students are expected to participate, starting in the fall of 2007, MSU Provost Dave Dooley told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, which reported on the new program Sunday.

Istanbul Tech is “one of the two premier science and engineering research universities in Turkey,” Dooley said. “They teach one-third of their courses in English. So their students are among the best in Turkey.”

Road flares found in bomb scare

Nine law-enforcement agencies responded to a bomb scare and an evacuation was ordered within a 300-meter radius of a convenience store in this eastern Idaho city after a package was found containing what looked like dynamite but turned out to be road flares.

Lt. Steve Findley of the Pocatello police said a clerk at Common Cents opened a mailing tube on top of an ice machine on Saturday and then called police after seeing what she thought was dynamite.

The explosives unit from the Twin Falls Police Department used X-rays to determine there were no wires or detonation devices.

Pocatello police Capt. Rick Capell said the flares were old and that one was half empty.
