U.S. team defeats Canada in Gold Cup
Tied 1-1 with time running out in overtime, the United States thought it would need to beat Canada with penalty kicks to take the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Carson, Calif. Turned out it needed just one.
Kristine Lilly scored on a penalty kick late in overtime to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Canada on Sunday night in the Gold Cup championship game.
Robyn Gayle fouled Carli Lloyd with an elbow just a few feet in front of the goal in injury time in the second overtime, and Lilly – the tournament MVP – sent the penalty kick sailing to the left of goalkeeper Erin McLeod.
Figure Skating
American pair wins
Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto of the United States won the ice dancing gold at the Cup of Russia in Moscow.
Belbin and Agosto finished with an overall 186.33 points.
Brian Joubert of France won the men’s, Switzerland’s Sarah Meier took the women’s gold and Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy won the pairs.
Skiing
Kucera wins Super-G
John Kucera of Canada won the season-opening super giant slalom at Lake Louise, Alberta, in temperatures that plunged to minus 11, his first top-10 finish in a World Cup race.
Kucera, the first skier out of the start hut, was timed in 1 minute, 29.70 seconds.
•Olympic bronze medalist Marlies Schild won her second straight World Cup slalom race of the season, leading Austria to another 1-2 finish with Nicole Hosp again taking second at Aspen, Colo.
Football
Player gunned down
One of the top high school running backs in Alabama was killed in a shooting at an outdoor basketball court near the player’s home in Wadley, Ala.
Terrance Wilkes, 18, was a senior at Wadley High School. His cousin, Jasper Buchannan, a University of Alabama student and former football standout at another high school, was wounded in the Saturday afternoon shooting, Randolph County Sheriff’s Investigator Gregory Dendinger.
Five men were arrested and charged with murder and assault.

Bet ends in shooting
A man fatally shot his friend in Lexington, S.C., with a high-powered rifle in a dispute over a $20 bet on the South Carolina-Clemson football game.
James Walter Quick, 42, was charged with murder in the shooting of Richard Allen Johnson, 43. Johnson died from a single shot to the chest, according to a preliminary autopsy.
The two had bet $20 on the annual game, with Quick taking South Carolina, which won 31-28, and Johnson taking Clemson, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts said. They drank beer all afternoon and watched the game Saturday at Johnson’s home, and began arguing about the bet after the game.
Metts said Quick went to his car, got the rifle he normally uses for hunting and fired one shot, hitting Johnson in the chest.
•The U.S. team lost to France and Italy defeated Cuba in four sets in the second round of the men’s volleyball world championships in Hiroshima, Japan.
The U.S. lost 17-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-17, 15-11 and fell to 1-4. Italy (4-1) will face defending champions Brazil on Tuesday.
•Anni Friesinger remained unbeaten this season, winning the women’s 1,500-meter race and breaking the track record at a World Cup speedskating event in Moscow, Russia. The German skater finished in 1 minute, 56.40 seconds.
•World track cycling champion Isaac Galvez of Spain, a runner-up in a Tour de France stage last summer, died after crashing during a six-day track race in Ghent, Belgium. He was 31.
