CV boys run wild at Sunfair Invite

The Central Valley boys cross country team won five out of seven flights to take first place at the Sunfair Cross Country Invitational held at Franklin Park in Yakima on Saturday.

The Bears were led by Sean Coyle, who finished 13th in the top-seeded seventh flight with a time of 16 minutes, 18.80 seconds in the 3-mile race. Central Valley’s Tylor Thatcher won the sixth flight with a time of 15:44.30 seconds. Brandon Close finished in 17:07.30 seconds to win the first flight and Nathan Damiano won the third flight in 16:41.30 seconds.

The Lewis and Clark boys finished 15th.

Coeur d’Alene (19th), Shadle Park (20th), University (32nd), Riverside (36th), St. George’s (41st) and Medical Lake (50th) also competed for the boys.

On the girls’ side, Shadle Park freshman Andrea Nelson finished in fifth place in the top-seeded seventh flight with a time of 18:48.70.

Mead was the top area finisher, taking eighth place. U-Hi (11th), Riverside (14th), North Central (17th), Shadle (24th), East Valley (25th) and LC (26th) also competed for the girls.

The event, in its 33rd year, is the largest invitational in the state.

•The host West Valley boys edged Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls to take first place at the Runner.s Soul/Valley Cross Country Classic at Plantes Ferry Park. Richard Keroack was the top finisher for WV, taking third place with a time of 16:43 in the 5,000-meter run. Lakeside had three runners place in the top four. Max Reeder took first place in 16:30, followed by Kyle Johnson, who finished in 16:37. Tim Welch finished fourth in 16:50. WV’s Michael White finished fifth in 16:55, followed by teammate Joey Hartmeier, who finished 1 second later. The Cheney boys took third place. On the girls’ side, Cheney took first place, led by Hayley Seipp’s fifth-place finish. Seipp finished the 5,000 in 20:17. Sandpoint’s Megan Bartlett finished first in 19:09 and guided the Bulldogs to a second-place finish. Gonzaga Prep took third, followed by WV (fourth), Pullman (fifth), Freeman (sixth) and Chewelah (seventh).
