Give Whitworth its due

On Sept. 23, the 17th-ranked Whitworth football team had an incredible come-from-behind victory that included two overtimes.

Consequently, I was very disappointed to see The Spokesman-Review devote only a few brief paragraphs to the story that appeared on the last page of the Sunday sports section.

What is the rationale for providing such short shrift to a local team that is nationally ranked in its division? Surely your sports writers and editors are aware that the number of athletes on the Whitworth team that come from regional high schools far exceeds the number playing at WSU and Eastern.

On Sunday, the S-R provided more coverage about the University of Montana than Whitworth. Does your readership really extend that far or are your reporters too encumbered to obtain details about a local team not covered by the AP?

Please consider giving Whitworth football its due. It is a great team with high potential this season.
