Pirates 3, Reds 0: At Pittsburgh, Marty McLeary pitched seven shutout innings and the Pirates beat Cincinnati. The Reds were eliminated from playoff contention.

Dodgers 4, Giants 2: At San Francisco, Greg Maddux outdueled rookie Matt Cain, hit a single and even stole a base as Los Angeles beat the Giants.

Phillies 4, Marlins 3: At Miami, Philadelphia beat Florida, but saw its playoff hopes ended when the Dodgers and Padres won.

Padres 3, Diamondbacks 1: At Phoenix, Mike Cameron hit a two-run homer to power San Diego past Arizona.

Astros 5, Braves 4: At Atlanta, Orlando Palmeiro’s single drove in the tiebreaking run as Houston beat the Braves to preserve its playoff hopes.

Cardinals 3, Brewers 2: At St. Louis, Scott Spiezio hit a bases-loaded triple in the eighth and the Cardinals beat Milwaukee to cut their magic number to one.
