Vandals look impressive

The University of Idaho women’s and men’s cross country teams finished third and eighth, respectively, at the Charles Bowles Invitational at Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem, Ore.

Idaho’s Rhea Richter took third place for the women, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 37.70 seconds.

Kevin Friesen led the men, finishing 13th out of 228 runners in the men’s 8,000 race in 24:47.15.

The Vandals women placed four runners in the top 30 in a race that featured 180 runners.

A pair of Vandals, Dee Olson and Mandy Macalister, competed unattached in the women’s gold division. Olson won the event with a time of 17:01.40, while Macalister finished fifth in 17:39.75.

Idaho’s next action will be at the Eastern Washington Invitational on Oct. 14.

Men’s soccer

Curtis Flournoy and Matt Friesen scored second-half goals to guide Whitworth to a 2-0 win over Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference match at Whitworth. The Pirates outshot the Lutes 15-5 and had a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.

Whitworth is 4-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NWC. The Pirates host Puget Sound today.

• Jay Vela scored the first goal at 24:42, but Community Colleges of Spokane couldn’t hold of Bellevue during a 2-1 setback. CCS outshot Bellevue 14-6 but had trouble scoring goals.

Women’s soccer

Whitney Melton scored two goals to lead North Idaho to a 7-0 win over Cloud County in a non-conference match at Glenwood Springs, Colo. The Cardinals had six first-half goals and outshot Cloud County 15-3.

•Jael Hagerott scored off a penalty kick with 2:35 left to lift Whitworth to a 2-1 win over visiting Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference game. Hagerott’s goal capped a comeback by the Pirates, who scored both of their goals in the final 9 minutes and improved to 6-1-1 overall and 4-1 in the NWC.

Whitworth will host Puget Sound today.

• Charity Weston scored in the 65th minute off assists from Jessie Malaska and Shannon Ross as Utah Valley State knocked off visiting Eastern Washington 1-0 in a non-conference match in Orem, Utah. The Eagles were outshot 22-2 by the Wolverines.

Eastern returns to action Tuesday to host Idaho in its last non-conference match of the season.

Volleyball

Heather Dunn had 20 assists, 15 digs and four kills, but it wasn’t enough as host Loyola Marymount defeated Gonzaga 30-18, 30-21, 30-25 in a West Coast Conference match. Heather Hughes led the Lions with 16 kills and 13 digs.

Gonzaga is 4-12 overall and 0-2 in the WCC.

•Stacie Matz had 13 kills and Kosel added 24 digs as Pacific Lutheran beat Whitworth 30-14, 22-30, 30-13, 31-29 in a Northwest Conference match in Tacoma. Nicole Vander Meulen had 12 kills to lead the Pirates.

Defending conference champion Whitworth drops to 3-14 overall and 2-4 in the NWC.
