Miami, FIU hand down harsher penalties

The Spokesman-Review

Miami and Florida International handed down additional punishment Monday in the aftermath of Saturday’s sideline-clearing brawl between the schools in the Orange Bowl.

Miami’s Anthony Reddick, who wielded his helmet as a weapon and smashed it into an FIU player, had his one-game suspension increased to an indefinite one.

FIU’s Chris Smith, who wrestled Miami holder Matt Perrelli down and appeared to punch him in the chin, was dismissed from the team.

Marshall McDuffie Jr., Smith’s teammate, who then kicked Perrelli in the head, was also thrown off the team. Both will remain on scholarship.

FIU’s new sanctions also included extending the one-game suspensions of 16 other players to indefinite ones.

FIU said its suspended players would have to complete 10 hours of anger management counseling and 50 hours of community service, plus would be on athletic probation for the remainder of the year. Miami said it would order its suspended players to complete community service as well.

“Lamar Thomas was fired from his job as TV analyst for Comcast Sports following his comments during Saturday’s fight in the Orange Bowl.

The former Miami player said, in part, “Now, that’s what I’m talking about. You come into our house, you should get your behind kicked. You don’t come into the OB playing that stuff. … You can’t come over to our place talking noise like that. You’ll get your butt beat. I was about to go down the elevator to get in that thing.”

“Northern Colorado fullback Garrett Bliss, 21, was arrested after a fight outside an apartment complex in Greeley, Colo., becoming the third UNC football player in five weeks to be accused in altercations.
