Shanahan comes through for Rangers

Brendan Shanahan came to New York to take some of the Rangers’ scoring load off Jaromir Jagr’s shoulders.

He is doing that along with taking

faceoffs, killing penalties and playing tough defense.

Shanahan scored his NHL-leading seventh goal of the young season, and the Rangers outlasted the New Jersey Devils 4-2 Monday night in New York.

Predators 2, Islanders 1 (SO): At Uniondale, N.Y., Steve Sullivan scored in regulation and a shootout to help Nashville win its second straight game, beating New York.

Paul Kariya ended the shootout with a goal after the Islanders chose to shoot first and had misses by Miroslav Satan and Viktor Kozlov.

Hurricanes 5, Lightning 1: At Tampa, Fla., Justin Williams had three goals and an assist, and Cam Ward made 34 saves to help Carolina beat Tampa Bay.

Williams scored twice during a three-goal second period that put Carolina up 4-0.

Blackhawks 5, Avalanche 3: At Denver, Martin Lapointe scored two goals, including the winner early in the third period as Chicago beat Colorado.

Lapointe scored from just above the right circle at 5:26 as he slipped a shot past Jose Theodore and into the right side of the net.

Canucks 2, Oilers 1: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Sami Salo scored the go-ahead goal in his return to the lineup to lift Vancouver over Edmonton.

Taylor Pyatt also scored and Roberto Luongo made 17 saves to help the Canucks win.

Red Wings 3, Kings 1: At Los Angeles, Robert Lang scored twice in the third period and Kris Draper had a short-handed goal to lead Detroit to victory over Los Angeles.

Detroit goalie Chris Osgood stopped 22 shots in his season debut.
